Robert Black Tribute Concert: John Luther Adams’ Darkness and Scattered Light
This past year our friend Robert Black passed away. One of the great bass players of our time and a founding member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, he was a part of everything we did, from our first concert in 1987 until this year. No-one on the planet could make the double bass sing, dance, sound like a drum, spin like a top, like Robert Black. And no one dedicated his life to the new with as much invention, musicality and passion. We are all blessed to have been his friends.
Robert’s last recording was John Luther Adams’ Darkness and Scattered Light. This beautiful album overflows with JLA’s monumental reflections on the vastness and majesty of the natural world. It was released after Robert died and went on to receive a Grammy nomination. The music on it has never before been performed before in its entirety – rich, sonic, deep, complete, and live. The concert will be performed by six bassists – all former students of Robert’s and alumni of the Bang on a Can Summer Festival – and will be led by longtime Bang on a Can colleague Gregg August, including bassists Tristan Krausse, John-Paul Norpoth, Eleonore Oppenheim, Evan Runyon, Will Yager.

From T:
Ty will premiere “Seated at the Throat” - a huge solo piece we’ve been working towards for several years at this point. It’s dark, hermetic, sensuous; so sunken it’s hallucinogenic; so blurry it’s the sharpest I’ve ever felt…
Will & I will join Ty on stage for the first outing of a new deep terrane: “deep terrane (something moves).” the deep terrane project is a new branch off of my tree; more info on it can be found on my website. It pivots in the darkness, stepping carefully, listening to each footfall in quiet terror…
Closing the program, Ty gives another performance of “nestbuilder.” Finally, the music bends outwards…
The concert is going to be one unbroken experience, each piece emerging from the previous one. It’s an intense collection of pieces: it’ll be a dark, sunken, hermetic, tense…, but I hope touching & urgent queer blood-seance.
I’m excited to join earspace in December 2023 for their inaugural residency at Duke University, culminating in a performance at the Baldwin Auditorium. Joined by soprano Ah Young Hong, earspace will perform vocal works by Hans Abrahamsen, Michael Hersch, Duke composition professor John Supko and earspace Co-Director Richard Drehoff Jr. In addition to these vocal works, we are thrilled to showcase the creative talents of Duke University graduate student composers Mozhgan Chahian, Ethan Foote, Brooks Frederickson, Josué Collado Fregoso, and Chris Williams.
